Ana Gonzalez-Nayeck

Faculty Fellow

I am an assistant professor of environmental science in the Natural Sciences department at Baruch College, City University of New York. At Lamont, I am an INSPIRE Fellow collaborating with Sarah Hurley within the Microbial Evolution and Biogeochemistry group. My research is laboratory-based and uses the tools of stable-isotope biogeochemistry to ask questions relevant to microbial ecosystems. Currently, I am most excited about how Cyanobacteria allocate their fixed carbon both within and outside their cells, in planktonic and mat-forming communities. Prior to Baruch, I was a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Geosciences department at Williams College, received my Ph.D. from Harvard University, and was an undergraduate student at Columbia/LDEO. As a former first-generation college student and proud Latina scientist, I am keenly aware of the need for a more inclusive environmental science community, and this context is always at the forefront of my teaching and research.
